Outside of Norway, there is only one remaining medieval stave church which is located in Sweden and was built during the 14th century, approximately more than 100 years after the Norwegian wooden church was built. The Urnes Stave Church was expanded in the 17th century CE, and many of the artefacts and decorations are also from this era.

The Urnes Stave Church (ca 1050) is the oldest of its kind in Norway. Between the 11th and 14th century about 1200 Stav-churches arose in Scandinavia. The Vikings were being christianized at that time, but also held on to their own beliefs. In this their ships played a central role, and so they constructed their churches as if they were ships.

The carvings come from an earlier church built on the site, and were reused in the current surviving iteration of the stave church. Urnes stave church is considered to be the queen of stave churches, and is one of the four Norwegian cultural heritage sites to be found worthy of being included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
