Surface water can be affected when the chemicals used in manufacturing facilities enter directly into a water source. PFAS are a large, complex, and ever-expanding group of manufactured chemicals that are widely used to make various types of everyday products. For example, they keep food from sticking to cookware, make clothes and carpets resistant to stains, and create firefighting foam that is more effective. PFAS are used in industries such as aerospace, automotive, construction, electronics, and military. PFOS has been in commercial use since the 1950's, predominantly in soil and stain-resistant coating products on fabrics, carpets, and leather, and in grease and oil resistant coatings on paper products, including food contact papers. Other uses leading to PFOA and PFOS, with R2 better than 0.99 and 5–15% RSD (Figure 2). For higher-level analysis 200 to 20,000 µg/L, linear calibration curves can be used.

PFOA and PFOS are no longer Perfluorooctane sulfonate or perfluorooctanyl sulfonate (PFOS) is a synthetic (human made) chemical belonging to a large family of compounds known as perfluorinated chemicals. The exposure of some wildlife organisms in Canada (e.g., polar bear, bird species) to PFOS could be near or at levels that are harmful to them. PFAS stands for a broad group of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The group contains several categories and classes of durable chemicals and materials with properties that included oil, water, temperature, chemical and fire resistance, as well as electrical insulating properties. PFOS may increase the risk of liver damage, thyroid dysfunction and heart disease. PFOS affects antibody production and compromises the body’s overall immunity. PFOS exposure may result in low birth weight, accelerated puberty and skeletal variations.

On May 19, 2016, EPA issued a lifetime health advisory of 70 parts per trillion ( PPT) for long-term exposure to PFOA and PFOS in drinking water. New York State

PFOS can induce oxidative stress-mediated DNA damage repair systems with transcriptional regulation of detoxification, antioxidant, and apoptosis-related genes, resulting in developmental retardation and reduced fecundity in the copepod T. japonicus. PFOS and PFOA stand for perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid, respectively. Both are fluorinated organic chemicals, part of a larger family of compounds referred to as perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). These substances are synthetic compounds that are unique for being water and lipid-resistant.
